Abu Dhabi : Abu Dhabi City Municipality has expanded its network of air-conditioned outdoor walking tracks, providing residents and visitors with temperature-controlled environments to remain physically active during peak summer months.
The initiative spans three major locations across the capital: Al Khalidiyah Park, Al Mamoura Walkway in the Al Nahyan district, and King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa Park. By combining smart architecture, underfloor cooling, and shaded layouts, the urban project keeps ambient walking temperatures between 24°C and 25°C even when outdoor temperatures soar.
Municipal authorities designed the climate-adapted infrastructure to support community health and encourage year-round outdoor recreation. The tracks cater to all age groups, including senior citizens and people of determination, offering a free alternative to indoor gym facilities.
The movement toward climate-resilient pedestrian paths began with the launch of the Al Mamoura Walkway in the Al Nahyan area. The facility relies on underfloor cooling technology paired with translucent roofing that allows natural sunlight to filter through while repelling radiant heat.
Building on that model, the Department of Municipalities and Transport opened King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa Park, featuring a 700-metre cooled pedestrian circuit integrated into broader athletic and green spaces. The network expanded further with the completion of the 660-metre walkway at Al Khalidiyah Park, designed specifically to maintain a steady 25°C microclimate.
Urban planners view these climate-controlled spaces as a crucial step toward building a more walkable city. By removing extreme heat as a barrier to exercise, Abu Dhabi aims to foster healthier daily routines while maximizing the utility of public parks regardless of the season.
