Missing person tallies approach 2,000 across flood-hit Himalayan regions while emergency crews deploy drones for search operations.

KATHMANDU, August 29, 2026 – At least 17,000 children require urgent humanitarian assistance following catastrophic flash flooding across northern Nepal, UNICEF warned on Saturday, as disaster management officials reported that the number of unconfirmed missing people has surged to nearly 2,000.

The United Nations agency reported that the disaster completely destroyed 18 schools and damaged 20 others, cutting off essential educational infrastructure and critical care services for thousands of displaced families. To meet immediate relief needs, emergency teams have begun distributing hygiene kits and direct cash assistance across the severely impacted districts of Nuwakot, Rasuwa, and Dhading.

Data released by Nepal’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority confirmed that 14,829 security personnel are currently deployed in search and rescue missions. Rescuers are utilizing specialized aerial drones to locate survivors in precarious valley sectors and mountain gorges where physical access remains impossible due to thick silt and collapsed road networks.

The disaster, triggered by a glacial mass collapse high in the Himalayas earlier this week, unleashed massive torrents of water, mud, and sediment down mountain tributaries. In Nuwakot, a river valley district north of Kathmandu, entire communities were swept away within minutes, leaving riverbanks coated under metres of heavy mud.

Estimates from the International Committee of the Red Cross indicate that more than 93,000 people across the affected Himalayan belt have suffered direct impacts from the deluge. While formal relief aid has reached initial groups taking refuge in temporary relief shelters, humanitarian organizations caution that logistics remain severely strained across cut-off mountain corridors
