Rising crude benchmarks, driven by Middle East geopolitical unrest, strengthen bets on tighter Federal Reserve monetary policy, dampening demand for non-yielding bullion.

SINGAPORE — September 1, 2026 : Spot gold retreated to $4,440.34 per ounce in early Asian trading on Tuesday, pulling back from an intraday peak of $4,454.68 as an energy-driven inflation outlook led investors to reassess the path of international interest rates.

The precious metal hovered near $4,443 per ounce through the morning, pressured by a sharp rise in crude benchmarks following intensified geopolitical military exchanges across the Middle East. Higher fuel costs quickly renewed market concerns over sticky consumer prices, shifting currency dynamics and dampening momentum for non-yielding precious metals.

Surging energy prices typically bolster gold’s long-term appeal as a hedge against currency debasement. However, the immediate reaction across Asian dealing desks reflected renewed expectations that the US Federal Reserve will maintain a hawkish stance for longer to tame stubborn inflation. When benchmark borrowing costs stay elevated, the opportunity cost of holding physical bullion increases relative to yield-bearing assets.

Market participants across key trading centers, including Singapore and London, noted that sovereign bond yields edged higher alongside the spike in oil. The dollar found steady buying interest, creating an additional currency barrier for international buyers purchasing dollar-denominated commodities.

Despite Tuesday’s modest retreat, underlying geopolitical risk continues to provide a structural floor for bullion. Traders are watching developments in the Middle East closely, alongside upcoming global purchasing managers’ index (PMI) data and employment releases, to gauge whether the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) will adjust its rate trajectory in upcoming policy meetings.
