Dubai Airport Clears Over 745,000 Travellers Through ‘Red Carpet’ Biometric Walkway in Eight Months

Average immigration processing times drop to 3.4 seconds as seamless facial recognition technology expands across DXB passenger terminals

DUBAI — More than 745,000 international passengers passed through Dubai International Airport (DXB) without presenting paper passports, boarding passes, or stopping at conventional immigration counters between January and August 2026, the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) announced on Tuesday.

The fast-track clearance is powered by Dubai’s advanced “Red Carpet” biometric border control corridor, which uses artificial intelligence and high-resolution facial recognition to identify travellers on the move. Immigration officials confirmed that 745,188 passengers utilised the contactless corridor during the eight-month period, achieving a 100 percent stop-free clearance rate.

Clearance times across the corridor averaged 3.4 seconds per passenger—down from standard processing benchmarks of 12.5 seconds—representing a reduction of over 60 percent. The system is designed to process up to 10 walking travellers simultaneously while conducting real-time digital background verifications.

Lieutenant General Mohammed Ahmed Al Marri, Director General of GDRFA Dubai, revealed the operational performance metrics during an official briefing outlining the emirate’s digital transformation in border control.

Dubai International Airport processed a total of 25,849,432 passengers between January and August 2026. Automated smart gates processed 9,382,814 entries and exits during this window, Major General Talal Ahmad Al Shanqiti, Assistant Director General for Airport Passport Affairs, said. Smart gate adoption accounted for over 60 percent of eligible airport passenger flows, reflecting sustained passenger migration toward automated clearance channels.

Specialised services tailored to children and passengers with disabilities also expanded during the period. The dedicated children’s passport control platforms at Terminal 3—designed for young travellers aged 4 to 12—handled 212,746 children between January and August. The child-friendly counters, first introduced in April 2023 to provide an interactive immigration experience allowing youngsters to stamp their own passports, have handled 2,066,195 children since launch.

For travellers categorized under People of Determination, airport authorities deployed dedicated passport lanes equipped with assistive listening devices, tactile signage, and barrier-free access. A total of 263 border facilitation officers received specialised training to support passengers with mobility, visual, and hearing requirements. GDRFA noted that 15 technical evaluation delegations inspected DXB facilities to monitor and certify service compliance across passenger touchpoints.

International border security agencies and aviation regulators have taken note of the automated infrastructure. Dubai hosted 51 local and international official delegations examining its smart border architecture during the first eight months of 2026. The department earned 15 regional and global border management awards over the period. The Red Carpet deployment secured a Tier 3 (InUse) Innovation Endorsement from the Global Innovation Institute, alongside formal recognition at the IDC Voices of AI Innovation Forum as an enterprise-grade AI execution model.

To alleviate peak-hour congestion at terminal entry points, GDRFA rolled out its “Click and Travel” mobile counter service. Under the initiative, roving immigration officers equipped with secure, handheld biometric tablets approach waiting passengers in high-traffic queues to clear arrivals and departures directly from terminal holding zones.
