Podium sweeps in martial arts, mountaineering milestones, and continental leadership roles underline the impact of the UAE’s sustained sports development strategy.

ABU DHABI — Emirati female athletes have cemented a commanding presence across the international sporting circuit over the past year, securing world championship podiums in combat sports, breaking track-and-field records, and claiming continental governance roles under the country’s expanded athletic empowerment mandate.

The performance surge reflects coordinated grassroots initiatives led by the Ministry of Sports and the UAE National Olympic Committee, working in tandem with specialized sports councils, federations, and performance academies.

Combat sports delivered the country’s highest medal haul. At the 2026 World Jiu-Jitsu Championship, the UAE national women’s team dominated the mats, with Asma Al Hosani securing gold in the under-52kg division, Balqees Al Hashmi taking top honors in the under-48kg category, and Shamma Al Kalbani clinching gold in the under-63kg bracket.

The momentum extended into continental junior ranks. At the Asian Youth and Junior Jiu-Jitsu Championships in Almaty, Kazakhstan, Dana Al Buraiki (under-45kg), Al Anoud Al Harbi (under-48kg), and Aisha Al Junaibi (under-63kg) each claimed gold. In mixed martial arts, youth prospects Hind Al Hashmi and Kadi Suleiman added two world championship golds at the Youth MMA World Championships.

On the high-altitude circuit, 19-year-old mountaineer Fatima Abdulrahman Al Awadhi set a regional benchmark on July 18, 2026, becoming the youngest Arab climber to ascend above 7,000 meters and the first Emirati to summit the 7,134-meter Lenin Peak in Kyrgyzstan’s Pamir mountain range.

On the judo tatami, national squad programs yielded historic returns. Bashirat Kharoudi earned the UAE’s first-ever gold medal at the Islamic Solidarity Games, while teammate Elisa Litiyev captured titles at both the 2026 Ulaanbaatar Grand Slam and Dushanbe Grand Slam, building on her previous gold at the Zagreb Grand Prix.

Archery prospect Huda Al Ali, competing under the Fujairah Martial Arts Club banner, confirmed her qualification for the Youth Olympic Games in Dakar, Senegal, following point-scoring campaigns across world youth events in Canada and Slovenia, alongside the Arab Championship in Tunisia.

In athletics, UAE junior competitors challenged world standards at the 2026 World Athletics U20 Championships in Oregon. Maryam Karim placed fourth in the women’s 400-meter hurdles, clocking 56.27 seconds—missing a bronze medal by 0.28 seconds after winning both her preliminary heat and semi-final. Salma Haitham Al Marri set a national junior record in the hammer throw with a 58.96-meter toss, placing 13th overall.

Regional titles followed in Doha, where taekwondo competitor Amna Al Loghani won gold in the under-67kg class at the fourth GCC Games.

Para-athletics programs maintained strong international form. Athletes of determination including Siham Al Rashidi, Maryam Al Matroushi, Sarah Al Junaibi, Noura Al Ketbi, Maryam Al Zeyoudi, Aisha Al Mheiri, Salama Al Khatri, Moza Al Zeyoudi, and Thikra Al Kaabi maintained regular medal-winning sequences across world and continental fixtures.

Strategic minds broke ground in board and motorized events. Rouda Al Serkal earned the Woman Grandmaster title in chess following her Arab women’s championship run, while International Master Wafia Darwish Al Maamari claimed gold at the World Rapid and Blitz Team Championships in Kazakhstan. On Lake Songe in Norway, powerboat racer Alia Abdul Salam set a Formula 4 world speed record at 129 km/h, eclipsing the previous benchmark of 128.7 km/h held by Britain’s John Brewer.

Sports administrators point to structured institutional backing rather than isolated individual talent as the driver of these outcomes.

“Emirati women have established a model of sustained competitiveness because the national strategy shifted from occasional participation to systematic preparation,” said Dr. Omniyat Al Hajeri, Vice Chairwoman of the Fatima Bint Mubarak Ladies Sports Academy.

Administrative appointments have followed competitive gains. Leaders including UAE Badminton Federation President Noura Al Jasmi and UAE Archery Federation President Hanadi Khalifa Al Kabouri now sit on regional and continental executive boards, expanding the country’s institutional influence across Olympic disciplines.
