Riyadh brands holy sites a strict ‘red line’ while Yemeni rebels reject targeting claims amid wider Strait of Hormuz supply shocks

RIYADH, Sept. 16, 2026 : Saudi Arabia intercepted and destroyed an armed drone launched by Yemen’s Houthi movement south of Mecca on Tuesday night before it breached restricted airspace, military authorities said, an escalation that pushed Brent crude above $107 a barrel as maritime transit corridors face worsening bottlenecks.

Royal Saudi Air Defence Forces tracked and eliminated the unmanned aircraft south of the holy city before it entered the prohibited flight boundary of Makkah Al-Mukarramah, according to coalition spokesperson Major General Turki al-Maliki. Al-Maliki warned that the security of Islam’s holiest sanctuaries and visiting pilgrims remains an absolute “red line,” adding that military forces retain the right to take proportionate deterrent actions.

Houthi authorities in Sanaa rejected Riyadh’s account within hours. A military spokesperson quoted by the Houthi-run SABA news agency described the coalition’s claims as fabricated propaganda, insisting the movement had launched no operations against holy sites and remained focused exclusively on military installations and naval passages.

The aerial interception unfolded amid widespread strain across Persian Gulf energy infrastructure. Benchmark crude jumped past $107 a barrel on international markets as traders weighed recurring transit pauses through the Strait of Hormuz against ongoing outages along Saudi Arabia’s East-West crude pipeline. The 1,200-kilometer overland pipeline, which typically bypasses the Gulf by linking eastern fields to Yanbu on the Red Sea, has suffered operational halts following drone and missile strikes directed at distribution hubs.

Vessel tracking data indicates tanker traffic traversing the Strait of Hormuz plunged to just four ships on Tuesday, down sharply from the daily average of 18, according to shipping monitors. Iranian seaborne crude exports have simultaneously ground to near zero under expanding enforcement measures, tighter unilateral sanctions, and maritime interdictions.

Washington issued an updated travel warning late Tuesday, advising American citizens to reconsider journeys to the Kingdom citing missile and drone threats against civilian population centers and critical infrastructure.

The White House confirmed regional security conversations remain active. US officials said emergency technical coordination is underway with Saudi Aramco to restore flows through alternate overland networks, though repair timelines for damaged pumping stations vary between several days and several weeks.
