Oil Retreats Below $100 as Saudi Output Offsets Persian Gulf Shipping Bottlenecks

Brent maintains triple-digit levels as persistent transit hazards through the Strait of Hormuz temper optimism over recovering Saudi export flows.

SINGAPORE — September 21, 2026 : Global crude benchmarks retreated on Monday as rising Saudi export volumes relieved acute market deficits, though persistent security threats in the Strait of Hormuz prevented prices from shedding a substantial geopolitical risk premium.

West Texas Intermediate dropped 1.08% to $99.22 per barrel during morning trading, breaking below the psychological $100 barrier. Global benchmark Brent fell 0.89% to settle at $103.00, while Abu Dhabi’s regional light sour benchmark, Murban, slid 2.86% to $117.90 per barrel.

Selling pressure surfaced following evidence that Saudi Arabia has steadily rebuilt its export apparatus after widespread regional disruptions. Export data compiled by Reuters indicates the kingdom raised outward crude shipments past 4 million barrels per day in September, rebounding sharply from August’s low of 2.4 million bpd.

Physical distribution channels across the Arabian Peninsula, however, remain heavily compromised. Riyadh has increasingly relied on ship-to-ship crude transfers in the Gulf of Oman to bypass inbound tanker congestion, offsetting operational bottlenecks along its Petroline (East-West Pipeline) network feeding the Red Sea terminal at Yanbu.

The wider supply equation hinges on navigation safety along maritime choke points. Ship-tracking indices logged just four commodity vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz on September 17, reflecting a structural bottleneck in global oil transit. Widespread automated identification system (AIS) blackouts among commercial tankers continue to mask actual movement, leaving refinery buyers uncertain over arriving deliveries.

International market watchers warn against interpreting Monday’s slide as an unwind of broader market tensions. In its September Oil Market Report, the International Energy Agency (IEA) revealed that security threats shuttered over 10 million barrels per day of Gulf capacity throughout August. Global observed commercial inventories plunged an additional 95 million barrels that month, marking a staggering 507-million-barrel depletion since February.

The Paris-based agency projected a total global oil supply contraction of 5.7 million bpd across 2026, pushing expectations for a full output recovery into 2027.

Independent baseline estimates from the US Energy Information Administration (EIA) present a parallel trajectory, projecting that Middle East production cutbacks will hold around 5.7 million bpd through the final quarter of the year.

The significant price premium carried by physical barrels over paper benchmarks illustrates lingering supply stress across Asia. While prompt WTI dropped below three figures, Middle Eastern sour crude retains a substantial cushion, underscored by Murban holding near $118. Refinery margins across Asian industrial hubs remain directly tied to whether transit through Hormuz and the southern entrance at Bab el-Mandeb can normalize without recurring military interdiction.

Until durable maritime security arrangements emerge between Washington and Tehran, energy desks expect oil prices to oscillate closely around the triple-digit threshold, balanced between short-term Saudi logistical gains and structural global inventory shortfalls.
