The Deputy Chairman of Dubai Police and Public Security and patron of UAE sports passed away on Monday morning, with flags ordered at half-mast across the emirate.
DUBAI — Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the younger brother of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, died on Monday morning at the age of 76.
The Dubai Ruler’s Court announced a 10-day period of official mourning across the emirate, beginning Monday, during which national flags will fly at half-mast.
Sheikh Ahmed served as the Deputy Chairman of Dubai Police and Public Security, playing an active role in strengthening the emirate’s law enforcement, emergency readiness, and civil protection frameworks over several decades.
He was the fourth and youngest son of the late Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Dubai’s former ruler and a founding father of the United Arab Emirates.
Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid paid a personal tribute to his brother on social media platform X.
“May Allah have mercy on Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid Al Maktoum,” Sheikh Mohammed wrote. “May Allah have mercy on you, my brother. You are now with our Lord, the Most Generous, the Almighty. You are gone from our sight, Ahmed, but never from our prayers or our hearts.”
Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, UAE Deputy Prime Minister, and Minister of Defence, expressed grief over the loss of his uncle. Condolences were also extended by UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
Beyond his official administrative duties, Sheikh Ahmed was an influential figure in the development of modern Emirati sports and international equestrian racing. He established Jebel Ali Stables and Jebel Ali Racecourse, competing on world turf circuits under his distinctive yellow and black silks. Under his leadership as president of Al Wasl Sports Club, the Dubai-based institution expanded its domestic and regional football legacy. He was also the founding chairman of the Dubai International Marine Club, launched in 1988 to advance water sports across the Persian Gulf.
