International crew of American, Canadian, and Russian spacefarers heads to orbit to study how long-term microgravity affects human biology and circulation.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida — A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket roared off its seaside launchpad in Florida on Thursday, carrying an international quartet of astronauts bound for the International Space Station to conduct experiments on human biology, circulation, and long-duration space survival.

The two-stage booster, topped with a commercially operated Crew Dragon capsule, lifted off under clear night skies from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station on Florida’s Atlantic coast. Minutes later, the spacecraft separated smoothly from its upper stage, beginning an autonomous orbital chase toward the orbital laboratory roughly 400 kilometers (250 miles) above Earth.

The four-person team brings together two American astronauts, one Canadian astronaut, and a Russian cosmonaut. Their journey underscores the ongoing international framework that keeps the decades-old space outpost staffed around the clock, even amid terrestrial geopolitical shifts.

Upon docking, the arriving team will expand the station’s population, joining seven crew members already working aboard the laboratory. Among those waiting to greet them are the four astronauts of the outgoing Crew-12 rotation, who are scheduled to hand over operations and return to Earth following an extended mission spanning more than seven months.

The incoming crew will pivot immediately to an intensive roster of biomedical experiments. Weightlessness presents acute physical challenges to the human frame, causing fluids to shift toward the upper body, reducing bone density, and altering cardiovascular function. Over their rotational stay, the researchers will investigate how prolonged exposure to microgravity affects blood flow, vascular elasticity, and clot formation.

Flight physicians and mission scientists view these studies as crucial prerequisites for deep-space exploration. Long journeys to the Moon under NASA’s Artemis campaign and future crewed expeditions to Mars will require astronauts to operate for months or years without immediate emergency medical infrastructure on Earth.

Beyond vascular medicine, the crew will maintain continuous physical monitoring protocols, gathering biometric and performance metrics that will help aerospace engineers design safer life-support environments, exercise regimens, and pharmaceutical countermeasures for deep-space transit.

Docking, hatch opening, and official welcome remarks will be streamed live via mission ground stations as the spacecraft converges on the orbital research complex.
