(DUBAI, UAE) — In a significant move to bolster public safety and infrastructure resilience, authorities in Abu Dhabi have announced that the installation of lightning protection systems is now mandatory for all buildings. Property owners and developers who fail to comply with these updated safety regulations will face a hefty administrative fine of AED 5,000.
The directive, issued on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, aims to minimize the risks of fire and structural damage caused by lightning strikes during unstable weather conditions. Civil Defense and municipal inspectors will soon launch comprehensive inspection campaigns across the emirate to ensure all commercial, residential, and industrial structures meet the required safety criteria.
Under the new mandates, building management must install certified lightning rods, grounding systems, and surge protection devices. Furthermore, existing buildings are required to undergo routine maintenance and safety audits to certify that their protection mechanisms are fully operational before the upcoming seasonal weather transitions.
Authorities emphasized that compliance is non-negotiable, as malfunctioning or absent protection systems pose an immediate hazard to human lives and surrounding properties. Violators will be given a specific grace period to rectify their building status, after which the AED 5,000 penalty will be strictly enforced, with potential legal escalations for repeated non-compliance.
