Arlington, Texas: A dramatic stoppage-time goal by Mikel Merino shattered Portuguese hearts as Spain secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Portugal at the Dallas Stadium, booking their spot in the quarter-finals of the FIFA World Cup 2026.

The high-stakes Round of 16 clash seemed destined for extra time until two Spanish substitutes combined in the 91st minute. Ferran Torres turned provider, setting up Merino, who unleashed a powerful, precise low finish past Portuguese goalkeeper Diogo Costa to seal the game.

A Tale of Two Halves The first half was an end-to-end affair with plenty of shots but no goals. Spain’s Mikel Oyarzabal missed a golden opportunity, dragging his shot wide after being put clean through by Dani Olmo. Moments later, Diogo Costa produced a stunning fingertip save to deny Alex Baena’s curling effort.

Portugal had their own moments of brilliance. Goal-legend Cristiano Ronaldo remained a constant threat, and Nuno Mendes came agonizingly close to breaking the deadlock when his deflected strike rattled the crossbar. The second half saw both tactical setups turning cautious, with neither side willing to blink first, until Merino’s late heroics decided the tie.

The End of the Ronaldo Era The final whistle not only sparked wild celebrations in the Spanish camp but also marked the end of an era for global football. Cristiano Ronaldo, who had reiterated before the match that this would be his final World Cup, walked off the world stage for the last time.

The 41-year-old icon leaves behind an unparalleled World Cup legacy, having scored 11 goals in 27 appearances and making history as the first man to score in six different editions of the tournament.

Luis De La Fuente’s Spain will now travel to the Los Angeles Stadium for the quarter-finals, where they will face the winner of the USA vs. Belgium match.
