Mohamed Alabbar shares a first look at the hospitality and retail concept as the master developer accelerates multi-billion-dirham projects across the emirate.
DUBAI, Oct. 15, 2026 : Emaar founder Mohamed Alabbar has unveiled a digital rendering of an upcoming Downtown Dubai development titled “Dubai Mall Plaza and Hotel,” signaling a further build-out of the district surrounding the world’s most visited retail destination.
The preview, posted to Alabbar’s official Instagram channel with the caption “Dubai Mall Plaza and Hotel — coming soon,” featured a computer-generated fly-through of an open-air, plaza-style complex. The visualization shows expansive pedestrian thoroughfares, illuminated architectural features, and integrated commercial pavilions, set directly against the backdrop of Burj Khalifa.
While Alabbar did not state projected investment figures, construction timelines, or an opening date, the announcement points to sustained capital deployment across Emaar’s flagship urban retail core.
The developer is currently executing a 1.5-billion-dirham ($408 million) expansion of Dubai Mall. First announced in mid-2024, the initiative covers “The District,” a planned commercial wing comprising 279 units—198 retail stores and 81 food and beverage establishments. Investor disclosures from Emaar have also detailed an extension toward Grand Drive spanning 440,000 square feet of gross leasable area, targeting delivery in the second half of 2028.
Emaar has not formally clarified whether the newly teased Plaza and Hotel structure is integrated within the ongoing Grand Drive works or represents an independent, phased addition.
Downtown Dubai recorded over 105 million visitors across recent annual cycles, driving a push toward mixed-use designs that marry outdoor walkable avenues with high-end hospitality.
The move comes alongside Emaar’s parallel megaproject at Dubai Creek Harbour: the 2.6-million-square-metre Dubai Square. Positioned as the central commercial hub of the broader Dh180 billion waterfront master development, Dubai Square is under active construction and scheduled for completion by 2028. Designed to integrate an indoor transport network that accommodates electric vehicles alongside pedestrian walkways, it anchors Emaar’s broader retail strategy outside the Downtown core.
Dubai’s wider commercial real estate pipeline reflects similar activity. Outside Emaar’s portfolio, Dubai Holding Asset Management subsidiary Dubai Retail is developing Skylight Mall along Al Khail Road. The 1.3-million-square-foot project, slated to open in 2027, will introduce more than 360 stores serving residential catchment areas across Jumeirah Village Triangle, Jumeirah Islands, and The Springs.
For Dubai Mall Plaza and Hotel, formal tender awards, total built-up area figures, and project milestones are expected in forthcoming regulatory filings and corporate disclosures.
