Berlin orders the return of a minehunter and support vessel stationed in Djibouti after concluding a mine-clearing deployment in the Strait of Hormuz is no longer necessary.
BERLIN : Germany is withdrawing two naval vessels stationed in the Red Sea after defense officials determined they are no longer required for potential mine-clearing operations near the Strait of Hormuz.
The decision follows a subtle shift in the regional security posture, influenced by recent diplomatic progress between the United States and Iran.
The vessels — the minehunter Fulda and the support ship Mosel — were deployed through the Suez Canal in June and stationed in Djibouti. The contingent included roughly 140 personnel, featuring specialized mine-clearance divers, autonomous underwater systems, and force protection units.
German defense officials had placed the task force on standby to respond if Tehran attempted to block or mine the Strait of Hormuz, a critical bottleneck for global energy shipments.
German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius previously emphasized that any operational movement into the Strait would depend entirely on diplomatic developments and explicit consent from regional states, including Oman and Iran. The deployment was framed strictly as a precautionary measure to safeguard commercial navigation rather than an offensive action.
While the Fulda and Mosel are departing, Germany’s broader naval commitment to Middle Eastern security remains active. Berlin continues its involvement in the European Union’s Operation Aspides, designed to protect commercial shipping in the Red Sea from ongoing drone and missile strikes by Yemen’s Houthi movement. Furthermore, the German Navy maintains its maritime presence under the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), which has been extended through the end of 2026.
Despite the withdrawal, defense officials in Berlin warned that maritime security across the region remains volatile. Houthi forces continue to target merchant ships in the Red Sea, and European governments remain cautious that any breakdown in US-Iran dialogue could quickly reignite threats to international shipping corridors.
