Brent benchmark hits multi-month high following OPEC+ output discipline and rising geopolitical risks across global trade routes.

KOZHIKODE: Global crude oil prices surged past $87 a barrel on Friday, driven by tightening global supplies, continued production curbs from major exporters, and heightened geopolitical tensions along vital maritime trade routes.

International crude benchmarks climbed to multi-month highs on Friday as markets absorbed tighter physical supply signals alongside robust demand forecasts from key industrial economies. Brent crude, the global benchmark, traded above $87 per barrel in Asian trading hours, while West Texas Intermediate (WTI) followed suit with gains across front-month contracts.

Market Drivers and Supply Constraints

The recent upward momentum reflects sustained output cuts by the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and its allies (OPEC+), led by Saudi Arabia and Russia. The cartel’s voluntary supply reductions have effectively drawn down commercial inventories in key consuming regions, creating a tighter market balance entering the second half of the year.

Geopolitical friction in the Middle East and ongoing disruptions to Red Sea shipping routes have added a risk premium to physical oil cargoes. Tankers navigating longer transit routes around the Cape of Good Hope have tied up floating supply, effectively increasing transportation costs and tightening spot availability across European and Asian refining hubs.

Economic Outlook and Demand Indicators

Refining margins remain supported by seasonal demand spikes in transport fuels, alongside recovering manufacturing signals in China and India. Financial analysts note that despite persistent macroeconomic headwinds and high interest rates in Western markets, global oil demand has demonstrated resilient growth.

Energy market monitoring agencies suggest that if current OPEC+ quotas remain unchanged through the upcoming quarters, global inventories could draw down further, potentially maintaining upward pressure on benchmark prices into the near future.
