Cross-border projectiles injure two civilians in Saudi border town while rebel advances near Bab el-Mandeb rattle maritime shipping routes

RIYADH, Sept. 13, 2026 : Yemen’s Houthi rebels claimed fresh drone and missile attacks targeting southern Saudi Arabia overnight, hours after cross-border fire injured two people in the kingdom’s border province of Jazan and rebel advances along the Red Sea coast triggered fresh alarm in international shipping corridors.

Saudi civil defense authorities confirmed that a projectile launched from Yemeni territory struck Al-Tawwal governorate, a border district in the southwestern Jazan region near the Red Sea. The blast damaged a local mosque and several civilian structures, leaving two people wounded. Warning sirens also sounded across Sharurah in the neighbouring Najran province, though local emergency services reported no casualties or structural damage there.

Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree said in a broadcast statement that rebel forces launched coordinated strikes against military installations in Sharurah. The group did not release operational footage or specify the precise timing of the assault.

The exchange comes as military shifts along Yemen’s western shoreline threaten months of fragile calm. Rebel units recently pushed into coastal territory and strategic points overlooking the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, the chokepoint connecting the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden and the wider Indian Ocean.

Yemen’s internationally recognized government, operating primarily from Aden with backing from a Saudi-led coalition, described the rebel gains as a painful setback. Officials in Aden warned that the escalation risks opening an aggressive coastal front, complicating United Nations-brokered stabilization efforts and reviving full-scale hostilities that have devastated the country for over a decade.

Maritime monitors and energy markets are tracking the movement closely. The Bab el-Mandeb corridor serves as a primary transit lane for global crude tankers and container traffic navigating between Asia and Europe via the Suez Canal. Any sustained military footprint by the Houthis on islands flanking the strait raises transit risks for commercial operators, who have already weathered years of targeted drone, missile, and boarding incidents in surrounding waters.

In Sanaa and surrounding rural areas, residents expressed dread over renewed territorial fighting. Families in districts like Bani Matar, west of the capital, have faced acute shortages of basic goods, fluctuating fuel prices, and crippled infrastructure since the conflict erupted in late 2014.

Saudi Arabia’s defense ministry has not commented on retaliatory sorties against Houthi launch sites across the border. Riyadh has spent the past two years pursuing direct and indirect diplomatic tracks with the rebel movement to secure permanent border security guarantees and exit the costly conflict. Continued cross-border fire, paired with rebel expansion toward critical shipping lanes, places direct strain on those negotiations.
