New Delhi: The Indian government is closely monitoring 28 shipping vessels carrying around 778 Indian nationals in the Persian Gulf near the Strait of Hormuz, as tensions escalate due to the ongoing conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran.

According to Rajesh Kumar Sinha, Special Secretary in the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, 24 vessels carrying 677 Indian seafarers are currently positioned on the western side of the Strait of Hormuz, while four vessels with 101 crew members are located on the eastern side.

Sinha said the government is closely tracking developments to ensure the safety and security of Indian seafarers in the region.

Authorities, ship managers, and recruitment agencies are coordinating with Indian embassies and local authorities to provide assistance and medical support if required.

Enhanced monitoring

The ministry has intensified monitoring of the maritime situation in the Persian Gulf and strengthened preparedness measures to safeguard Indian vessels and crew members.

The Directorate General of Shipping has issued advisories directing Indian-flagged vessels and Indian seafarers to adopt enhanced security precautions and comply with reporting protocols, including sharing real-time movement details.

Coordination and support

Sinha said the government is maintaining regular communication with industry stakeholders to ensure necessary support for shipping companies and seafarers.

Despite the regional tensions, port operations across India remain stable, he added.

Major ports have introduced measures such as continuous monitoring of vessel movements in coordination with shipping lines and vessel agents, along with real-time assessments of developments in the region.

Control rooms activated

Dedicated 24-hour control rooms have been established at the ministry and the Directorate General of Shipping to track the evolving situation.

Authorities are also in contact with ship owners, operators, and seafarer associations to provide timely updates and assistance.

Ports have been instructed to support exporters and ensure uninterrupted export and import trade operations despite the tensions.
