Brent crude stabilizes around three-week lows as markets await concrete progress on proposals to restore critical Persian Gulf shipping routes.

TOKYO:Crude oil benchmark prices held steady on Thursday, hovering near $80 per barrel as market participants balanced optimism over potential diplomatic progress between the United States and Iran against persistent risks surrounding the Strait of Hormuz.

In Asian morning trade on Thursday, Brent crude futures edged down 7 cents, or 0.09%, to $79.38 per barrel. West Texas Intermediate crude fell 21 cents, or 0.28%, to $75.01 per barrel. The subdued trading followed significant declines earlier in the week, when Brent dropped 5.3% to settle at $79.36 and WTI fell 5.7% to $75.77—marking three-week lows for both benchmarks.

The primary catalyst for the recent market repricing centers on diplomatic efforts mediated by Qatar and Oman. Qatari officials confirmed that draft proposals aiming to ease regional tensions and restore commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz are actively circulating between Washington and Tehran.

The Strait of Hormuz remains the central focal point for global energy markets, as it historically facilitates the transit of roughly one-fifth of global petroleum consumption and substantial volumes of liquefied natural gas. Geopolitical disruptions through the chokepoint previously drove Brent prices above $100 per barrel during initial supply shock periods.

While draft proposals indicate structural movement toward a resolution, fundamental differences persist between negotiators. Current proposals under discussion involve dual oversight mechanisms for traffic, including Iranian administration over inbound vessel traffic and Omani monitoring of outbound shipping—terms that have faced opposition from U.S. officials.

Market analysts note that the recent price contraction reflects a reduction in geopolitical risk premiums rather than an immediate restoration of physical supply flows. Energy refiners and maritime transport operators require sustained access through the waterway before supply chains can fully normalize.

Until formal terms are finalized, crude prices remain bound within a tight range near the $80 threshold, leaving markets highly responsive to diplomatic updates from Doha, Muscat, Washington, and Tehran.
