National Centre of Meteorology warns of sudden convective clouds, gusty winds, and low visibility through Friday night

DUBAI — September 4, 2026 : Heavy downpours hit parts of the UAE on Friday afternoon, drenching Al Dhaid in Sharjah as atmospheric instability triggered convective cloud formations and gusty winds across eastern and southern territories.

The National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) issued a multi-emirate weather alert valid from 1:30 p.m. until 10:00 p.m., warning of rapid convective cloud build-up that brings localized rainfall, abrupt surface wind surges, and blowing dust.

Tracking radars recorded significant showers sweeping through Al Dhaid and inland agricultural corridors, while satellite maps showed dense cloud cover expanding across the eastern coastline, touching mountainous stretches near Fujairah and parts of Sharjah’s interior, alongside isolated pockets in the south.

Motorists navigating arterial highways and interior roads have been urged to exercise extreme caution. Downdrafts associated with localized convective cells kick up loose desert sand, triggering sudden drops in horizontal visibility. Police commands in the eastern region advised drivers to reduce cruising speeds, switch on low-beam headlights during squalls, and avoid hazardous wadi valleys prone to quick surface water runoff.

These localized, high-intensity rain events are characteristic of late-summer transitional periods across the Arabian Peninsula. Intense daytime ground heating combined with the elevation of the Hajar mountains forces moist air to rise rapidly, forming towering cumulus and cumulonimbus clouds. While the storms typically deliver short-lived relief from high seasonal temperatures, the accompanying winds can cause unexpected disruptions on open roads.

The bureau maintains constant surveillance over emerging cloud belts via weather stations, satellite feeds, and Doppler radars, advising the public to rely solely on official forecasts as erratic conditions persist into the evening.
