OpenAI chief describes a near-future model capable of real-time screen visibility, continuous meeting context, and proactive work assistance.
SAN FRANCISCO:OpenAI Chief Executive Sam Altman has revealed that a future generation of ChatGPT could monitor computer screens, transcribe calls, and track daily work activities in real time within the next six months. Speaking during an interview with Z Fellows founder Cory Levy at the Internapalooza tech event, Altman described a transition from session-based prompts toward always-on digital collaboration.
The vision outlines an AI companion capable of maintaining continuous context across a user’s digital workflow rather than relying on individual text prompts. According to Altman, a descendant model expected within one generation could observe active screens, listen to virtual meetings, and digest workplace documents to provide immediate, proactive suggestions.
Altman explained that the system would operate strictly alongside users rather than making autonomous decisions on their behalf. By connecting to core workplace tools—including email, Slack, text messaging, and cloud documents—the AI would gather background context to relieve administrative burdens.
Giving a practical example, Altman noted that founders or executives struggling with high volumes of incoming customer feedback could rely on the assistant while drafting strategy documents or sales pitches. The model could automatically flag factual discrepancies, offer alternative ideas, or draft responses based on past conversations and internal file histories.
Addressing data privacy concerns associated with constant monitoring, Altman stressed that users would retain complete control over what information the system is permitted to access. Users can choose which applications to link and what data feeds to grant to the assistant.
The remarks build on OpenAI’s incremental push toward deeper system integration. The company recently introduced meeting transcription features for its desktop macOS application, along with integrations for cloud storage providers including Google Drive, Box, Dropbox, and OneDrive. Full ambient screen access and continuous multi-app awareness would represent the next major evolution in desktop AI technology.
