RIYADH — October 12, 2026 : A projectile strike on King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh has left 12 people dead and 309 injured, prompting Saudi Arabia to declare the assault a war crime and drawing warnings of retaliatory military intervention from Washington.

The attack struck a passenger terminal at the kingdom’s primary aviation hub, igniting fires, inflicting structural damage on terminal infrastructure, and forcing authorities to temporarily suspend flights. Emergency services transferred hundreds of wounded passengers and airport workers to medical centres across the capital, where several remain in critical condition.

Saudi Arabia’s General Authority of Civil Aviation confirmed the toll, identifying the dead as four Saudi citizens, two Bangladeshi nationals, and one citizen each from the United States, Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Palestine, and Sudan.

The Saudi-led military coalition blamed Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi movement for the strike. Coalition spokesperson Major General Turki Al-Malki condemned the bombardment as a “full-fledged war crime under customary international humanitarian law,” stating that allied forces will respond decisively.

Military officials reported that hostile fire also targeted eastern Saudi Arabia, where a projectile landed near King Fahd International Airport in Dammam and air defence batteries intercepted an inbound drone.

The airfield in Riyadh had already been targeted twice earlier in the week, part of an intensifying cross-border offensive that has disrupted commercial travel across the Gulf. Regional carriers, including Etihad Airways, cancelled multiple scheduled rotations between Abu Dhabi and Riyadh through Monday, citing operational safety concerns.

The killing of an American citizen drew an immediate reaction from Washington. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio denounced the strike as a reckless assault on civilian infrastructure, insisting that the attacks “must stop now”.

Speaking to reporters, US President Donald Trump stated that the United States is evaluating joint military strikes alongside Saudi forces targeting Houthi positions inside Yemen. Any direct US engagement would mark a substantial escalation in the broader regional showdown between Western-aligned states and Tehran-backed networks.

Technicians and security personnel are currently evaluating structural integrity across terminals 3 and 4 at King Khalid International. Aviation officials intend to resume staggered operations once airfield safety and perimeter air defences are fully secured.
