Department of Municipal Affairs rolls out an intensive six-month environmental initiative to drive sustainable consumption across the emirate.

SHARJAH, July 13, 2026 – The Sharjah Department of Municipal Affairs officially launched a comprehensive emirate-wide environmental campaign on Sunday, July 12, 2026, titled “Sharjah Deserves Better.” Running through December 31, 2026, the initiative aims to drastically curb the consumption of single-use products and accelerate the adoption of eco-friendly alternatives. Developed in strategic partnership with the Sharjah Government Media Bureau, the campaign aligns with the emirate’s long-term framework to embed environmental sustainability into daily civic life and protect natural resources.

The campaign is being executed via a multi-agency coalition involving regional municipalities, the BEEAH Group, the Environment and Protected Areas Authority (EPAA), and the Sharjah Private Education Authority (SPEA). This collaborative framework seeks to foster community-wide social responsibility by encouraging residents and businesses to systematically replace single-use items with sustainable options, thereby reducing plastic pollution and overall municipal waste.

An interactive awareness platform was inaugurated during the launch event to showcase the primary objectives and core tenets of the initiative. The launch included experiential activities focused on environmental preservation, sustainable consumption models, and waste circularity. As an immediate step toward behavioral change, reusable shopping bags were distributed to mall visitors, supported by a wider digital and multi-channel media awareness push across the emirate.

“Under the directives and visionary leadership of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, the emirate continues to pioneer initiatives that elevate the quality of life and preserve our natural environment for future generations,” stated His Excellency Sultan Mohammed bin Huwaidan Al Ketbi, Chairman of the Department of Municipal Affairs.

Al Ketbi emphasized that the initiative translates this vision into actionable community steps by incentivizing residents to reduce their reliance on disposable items, boost resource efficiency, and embrace durable, eco-friendly substitutes.

His Excellency Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdullah Al Qasimi, Director of the Sharjah Department of Municipal Affairs, underlined that the strategic longevity of the campaign is crucial for structural behavioral shifts.

“We have structured this campaign to span several months, incorporating targeted field events, digital media content, and interactive activations designed to reach all demographics,” Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdullah Al Qasimi said. “Institutional and community integration forms the cornerstone of this initiative, as genuine environmental transformation begins with small, daily individual habits that collectively evolve into an ingrained culture of sustainability.”

The Department of Municipal Affairs confirmed that the initiative will feature a rolling series of community activities, workshops, and educational programs over the next six months to reinforce the culture of responsible consumption across Sharjah’s residential and commercial sectors.
