WASHINGTON D.C. – In a historic departure from over a century of monetary tradition, the U.S. Department of the Treasury has announced that President Donald Trump’s signature will appear on new federal paper currency.

Since 1861, U.S. banknotes have conventionally featured the signatures of the Treasury Secretary and the Treasurer of the United States. Under the new directive, the Treasurer’s signature will be replaced by that of the President. The new notes will also carry the signature of Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.

A Symbolic Shift

Treasury Secretary Bessent defended the move, describing it as a testament to the nation’s economic trajectory. “This is a powerful way to recognize the historic achievements the country has reached under President Trump’s leadership,” Bessent stated, adding that the change symbolizes American economic growth and the global dominance of the dollar.

The first denominations expected to bear the President’s signature are the $100 bills, which reports suggest will enter circulation as early as June.

Key Changes to U.S. Currency

  • Historical Break: This marks the first time in 165 years that the Treasurer’s signature has been omitted from paper marks.
  • The Duo: Future banknotes will feature the signatures of President Donald Trump and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.
  • Gold Coins: This follows a recent authorization to mint 24-karat gold coins featuring Trump’s image to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the United States.

Political Backlash

The decision has sparked immediate criticism from the Democratic Party. Opponents argue that the administration is focusing on “symbolic gestures” while citizens continue to struggle with inflation and rising fuel costs. Critics have labeled the move as an unprecedented personalization of national currency, which has traditionally remained insulated from direct presidential branding.

Despite the controversy, the Treasury Department is moving forward with the redesign, signaling a new era for the “Greenback.”
