DUBAI: Passengers travelling to the UAE during the summer holiday season must familiarize themselves with the country’s strict customs regulations before packing their luggage. Carrying prohibited or restricted items can lead to hefty fines, confiscation of goods, and severe legal actions.

While items for personal use are permitted, the UAE government strictly prohibits certain goods from entering the country. Travellers must double-check their bags to ensure they are not carrying any illegal or banned substances.

Strictly Prohibited Items

The following items are completely banned from entering the UAE under any circumstances:

  • Narcotics and psychotropic (mind-altering) drugs
  • Counterfeit or fake currency
  • Obscene or pornographic material/publications
  • Gambling tools and related items
  • Unauthorized weapons, explosives, and hazardous chemical substances

Medical Rules & Guidelines

Certain medications require extreme caution. Carrying controlled or narcotic drugs without a verified doctor’s prescription or the required prior approval from the UAE Ministry of Health (MoH) can lead to serious legal issues and potential detention. Travellers carrying regular prescription medication must keep valid medical documents with them.

Items with Permissible Limits

Certain consumer goods are allowed only within strict, non-commercial limits. Exceeding these allowances will lead to customs intervention:

  • Food products: Allowed in reasonable quantities for personal use only.
  • Tobacco & Alcohol: Limited to up to 400 cigarettes and a maximum of 4 liters of alcohol (for passengers above 18 years old).

Important Note: To avoid unexpected delays or hassles at airport check-posts, travellers are strongly advised to check the official UAE Customs website for the most up-to-date regulations before booking their flights.
