US Federal Reserve and Central Bank of UAE Expected to Hold Interest Rates Steady

Policy makers are tipped to keep benchmark rates unchanged this week, maintaining borrowing costs as inflation pressures and volatile oil prices complicate the monetary outlook.

DUBAI: The US Federal Reserve is expected to keep its benchmark interest rate unchanged at its policy meeting on Wednesday, a move likely to be mirrored by the Central Bank of the UAE as central bankers balance cooling inflation against volatile energy prices.

Economists broadly expect the Federal Reserve to maintain the federal funds rate in the 3.5% to 3.75% target range, where it has stood since June. Owing to the UAE dirham’s fixed peg to the US dollar, the Central Bank of the UAE (CBUAE) is anticipated to hold its main Base Rate steady at 3.65%.

Financial markets reflect little expectation of an immediate shift, though the policy path for the remainder of the year remains sharply debated. Renewed geopolitical tensions and shifting energy costs have added complexity to central bank calculations. While US consumer price inflation slowed to an annual 3.5% rate in June from 4.2% in May, energy prices remained more than 15 percent higher than a year earlier.

A decision to hold rates offers a temporary reprieve for borrowers holding variable-rate facilities, including mortgages tied to the Emirates Interbank Offered Rate (EIBOR). However, it offers little immediate reduction in overall debt servicing costs.

Commercial banks continue to adjust their lending terms based on liquidity, competitive positioning, and risk profiles. For retail depositors, high benchmark rates continue to yield relatively attractive returns on fixed deposits and high-yield savings accounts across UAE banking institutions.

Market analysts remain divided over subsequent policy moves. Some traders foresee a potential rate increase as early as September if energy prices rebound or if core inflation proves resilient. The Federal Reserve’s September 15–16 meeting will include updated economic projections for growth, employment, and interest rates.

Conversely, institutional forecasters such as Morgan Stanley expect official rates to remain on hold through 2026. Analysts at the firm suggest that tighter broader financial conditions—driven by higher bond yields—have effectively cooled demand without requiring further official rate hikes, potentially opening the door for rate cuts in 2027 as inflation normalizes.

For UAE residents, fixed-rate mortgage holders remain insulated from short-term policy decisions until their term expiry. Those with variable-rate loans will see monthly adjustments depend heavily on reset schedules and underlying EIBOR trends rather than immediate policy rate announcements alone.
