Mediators step up efforts for direct negotiations amid maritime mine claims, missile interceptions over Saudi Arabia, and regional travel cautions

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — Diplomatic initiatives to de-escalate the ongoing war between the United States and Iran are accelerating across the region, even as maritime hazards in the Strait of Hormuz and repeated missile attacks highlight persistent volatility.

Negotiators from Qatar returned to Tehran on Friday in a concerted push to bring Washington and Tehran to the negotiating table. Direct talks could begin as early as next week in either Qatar or Turkey if Iranian officials sign off, with Pakistan also assisting in creating diplomatic openings. According to reports, US Vice President JD Vance offered to hold direct talks with Mohsen Rezaei, Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, to explore terms for a negotiated settlement, though no formal confirmation or framework has been finalized.

Significant policy rifts threaten to derail the talks before they convene. Washington has insisted that Iran’s nuclear programme be placed on the agenda from the outset. Tehran demands the immediate lifting of oil export sanctions and the US port blockade prior to talks, while asserting seven non-negotiable preconditions. Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf reiterated that Iran will not yield to an external strategy of pressure and incentives. US envoy Tom Barrack urged both parties to implement an immediate pause in hostilities, stating that an initial understanding remains attainable despite the lack of a formal timeline.

Security across the Strait of Hormuz continues to face competing claims and active threats. US Central Command commander Admiral Brad Cooper stated that American forces have cleared main shipping lanes of Iranian naval mines, providing support for more than 3,000 commercial vessels over a six-month span and facilitating the export of over 1.5 billion barrels of crude oil since the summer.

Conversely, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy asserted that three commercial tankers caught fire and exploded after detonating naval mines in an unauthorized southern channel—an account that remains unverified independently. The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations confirmed a separate maritime incident, reporting that a tanker was struck by a projectile on Thursday evening.

Regional security risks expanded further inland as the Saudi-led coalition confirmed the interception of a Houthi-launched drone over the Makkah region on Friday. The defensive engagement followed the interception of two Houthi ballistic missiles directed at Riyadh late Thursday.

With Gulf hubs handling heightened winter passenger traffic, regional aviation authorities and airlines advise travelers to monitor real-time flight schedules closely. Flight routes and timing remain subject to sudden adjustments, delays, and rerouting based on airspace security assessments.
