Rare 6,000-year-old fossil remains from Baynunah, ancient DNA findings, and UNESCO-listed pastoral traditions will anchor the museum’s inaugural temporary showcase opening this December.

ABU DHABI — October 17, 2026 : More than six millennia after a wild dromedary died along the Abu Dhabi coast, its fossilised remains will go on public display for the first time this December as the Zayed National Museum opens its debut temporary exhibition examining the deep history of the camel in Arabia.

Titled Tracks Through Time: The Camel in Society, Trade and Art, the exhibition explores more than 7,000 years of the dromedary’s evolutionary and cultural journey. The showcase, staged at the newly completed Saadiyat Cultural District institution, charts the animal’s transition from an ancient wild coastal grazer to the foundation of trans-Arabian commerce and modern heritage sports.

Excavated at Baynunah in the Al Dhafra region, the 6,000-year-old wild camel bones anchor an extensive collection of archaeological material that illustrates how the species shaped human survival in an arid landscape.

Genetic research forms a central pillar of the historical narrative. A study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) analysed ancient DNA from wild bones recovered at Emirati archaeological sites, including Al Sufouh, Tell Abraq, and Al-Buhais, comparing them with samples from 1,083 living camels. The genetic data revealed that wild dromedaries indigenous to the south-eastern coast of the Arabian Peninsula were direct founding contributors to the domestic camel gene pool. Scientists believe these ancestral herds sustained themselves on coastal mangroves, exploiting saline vegetation before the wild form vanished within two millennia of initial domestication.

The exact chronology of that transition remains an active area of scholarly inquiry. While the PNAS research places dromedary taming between 1100 and 800 BCE—grounded in declining bone dimensions, changes in butchery distribution across settlements, and period figurines—a 2025 study led by UAE University researchers in the journal Heritage traces domestication further back, suggesting a window between 1800 and 1100 BCE.

Bone fragments from Dubai’s Saruq Al Hadid site, featured in the exhibition, provide some of the earliest physical evidence linked to that debate. Once domesticated, dromedary caravans regularly numbered thousands of animals, establishing trade corridors that carried frankincense, myrrh, salt, and spices across the Near East, North Africa, and the Levant until modern mechanized transport took over in the 20th century.

Curators have also placed modern economic and cultural shifts at the centre of the presentation. Peter Magee, Director of Zayed National Museum, noted that the exhibition traces the full trajectory through to contemporary life, highlighting the prestige of Al Hejin racing and Mazayna beauty pageants. UAE University data indicates the domestic camel population expanded from 430,372 in 2015 to 569,527 by 2022, with Abu Dhabi accounting for nearly 90 percent of the national herd and females comprising roughly 85 percent.

Commercial applications have similarly evolved. The UAE now produces over 7,000 tonnes of pasteurised camel milk annually for domestic consumption and export to European, American, and Chinese markets, operating under an international food standard formally ratified earlier this year. Concurrently, high-stakes Mazayna competitions have intensified selective breeding practices, setting strict physical benchmarks and driving auction valuations into millions of dirhams.

Beyond livestock husbandry, the exhibition incorporates expressive arts and oral traditions. Visitors will hear field recordings of Alheda’a—the traditional camel-calling poetry used by herders—and Taghrooda, both inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Display cases pair 3,000-year-old rock art documented in Fujairah with an 1840s illustrated children’s volume on camel species, archival photography, early UAE postal issues, and testimonies from living desert community members, presenting the animal as an enduring anchor of national identity.
