Luis Diaz shines as Colombia dominate with 24 shots to secure leadership; Portugal finish second to set up crunch Round of 32 clash with Croatia

DUBAI: Colombia secured the top spot in Group K of the FIFA World Cup 2026 after holding a star-studded Portugal side to a thrilling 0-0 draw on Sunday. Despite dynamic attacking displays from both sides and a relentless barrage of 24 shots from Colombia, neither team could break the deadlock at the final whistle. The result ensures Colombia advances as group leaders with seven points, while Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal finishes second with five points, setting up a daunting Round of 32 clash against Croatia.

Colombia entered the final group fixture needing only a draw to sustain their position at the pinnacle of Group K, whereas Roberto Martinez’s Portugal required a definitive victory to leapfrog their South American opponents. Driven by Luis Diaz and Jhon Cordoba, Colombia initiated high-intensity counter-attacks from the opening whistle, testing the Portuguese backline continuously. Portugal responded in the 24th minute when Cristiano Ronaldo drew a foul from Jhon Arias, but his subsequent signature free-kick was comfortably collected by Colombian shot-stopper Camilo Vargas.

As the first half progressed, Portugal found their rhythm, orchestrating a series of clinical transitions. In the 39th minute, Bruno Fernandes unleashed a powerful close-range strike, which was denied by a spectacular reflex save from Vargas. Shortly before the interval, Joao Felix saw his ambitious effort sail narrowly over the crossbar, leaving both teams level at halftime.

Seeking a tactical breakthrough, Martinez introduced Joao Neves and Diogo Dalot at the restart. The tactical adjustment nearly paid dividends immediately when Dalot delivered a precise cross to Joao Felix, whose glancing header went wide. Colombia answered with relentless pressing, as second-half substitute Luis Suarez and playmaker James Rodriguez dictated the tempo, forcing Portugal’s goalkeeper Diogo Costa into multiple crucial interventions.

In a frantic period of stoppage time, Colombia thought they had snatched a dramatic winner when Davinson Sanchez thudded a powerful header into the back of the net from a corner routine. However, the assistant referee raised the offside flag, invalidating the goal. The stalemate held through five minutes of injury time, confirming Colombia’s leadership in the group. Colombia will now face Ghana in the Round of 32, while Portugal braces for a challenging knockout path against Croatia.

In the group’s simultaneous fixture, DR Congo secured their passage to the knockout phase as one of the best third-placed teams following a decisive 3-1 victory over Uzbekistan. Goals from Yoane Wissa and Fiston Mayele cancelled out Eldor Shomurodov’s early 10th-minute opener for Uzbekistan, completing an eventful final matchday for Group K.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup marks a historic expansion featuring 48 teams competing across the United States, Mexico, and Canada. Under this expanded format, the traditional round of 16 is preceded by a newly introduced Round of 32, significantly amplifying the stakes of the group-stage finishes. For traditional powerhouses like Portugal, dropping to second place introduces immediate vulnerability, matching them against formidable European rivals early in the single-elimination bracket.
