VANCOUVER: Switzerland secured their spot in the quarterfinals of the FIFA World Cup 2026 after a thrilling penalty shootout victory over Colombia. Following a nerve-wracking goalless draw in both regulation and extra time, the Swiss side triumphed 4-3 in the shootout. Switzerland will now face powerhouse Argentina in the quarterfinal clash.
The pre-quarterfinal encounter witnessed an intense neck-and-neck battle with both teams creating numerous scoring opportunities, only to be denied by clinical goalkeeping performance on both ends. Colombia threatened early in the first half with a brilliant strike from Gustavo Puerta in the 20th minute, which was safely gathered by the Swiss custodian.
