The 2026 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) kicked off with high drama at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on Saturday, as defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) took on Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the season opener. While the atmosphere in Bengaluru was electric, the start of the tournament was marked by a poignant atmosphere. In a departure from the league’s usual glitz, the BCCI opted not to hold an opening ceremony this year, choosing instead to honor the victims of a tragic stampede that occurred during RCB’s title celebrations last season. In a touching tribute, 11 seats in the stadium remained empty to represent the fans who lost their lives, while the RCB players took to the field wearing black armbands.

On the field, the match lived up to its billing as a high-stakes encounter. RCB captain Rajat Patidar won the toss and elected to bowl first, a decision that initially looked risky as the Sunrisers’ top order went on the offensive. Led by interim captain Ishan Kishan—stepping in for the injured Pat Cummins—SRH posted a formidable total of 201/9 in their allotted 20 hours. Kishan was the standout performer for the visitors, smashing a rapid 80 runs off 38 balls, including five towering sixes. Despite losing key bowlers like Josh Hazlewood and Yash Dayal to injuries before the season began, the RCB bowling attack managed to pull things back in the later stages, with Romario Shepherd and Jacob Duffy claiming three wickets each to prevent an even larger total.

The chase saw the home crowd find their voice as local hero Virat Kohli and Rajat Patidar began the hunt for 202 overs. As of the latest updates, the match remains finely balanced with RCB scoring at a brisk rate of over 12 runs per over. The defending champions appear to have the upper hand in the middle overs, though the absence of several key fitness-sidelined players like Nuwan Thushara has forced the team to rely heavily on their batting depth. As the tournament embarks on its 70-match journey across India, all eyes remain on the Chinnaswamy turf to see if the Bengaluru side can start their campaign with a victory in front of their dedicated home fans.
