MIAMI : A remarkable ten-goal third-place playoff has dramatically altered the landscape of individual accolades at the FIFA World Cup 2026. Despite France suffering a chaotic 6-4 defeat against England, Kylian Mbappé systematically dismantled historical goalscoring landmarks to seize control of the adidas Golden Boot race.

Mbappé’s second-half double at the Hard Rock Stadium moved him to 10 goals for the tournament, pulling two clear of his longtime rival Lionel Messi. The goals also elevated the 27-year-old forward to 22 career World Cup goals, surpassing Messi’s tally of 21 to make him the most prolific goalscorer in the history of the global showpiece.

The dramatic shift underscores the unique weight of the tournament’s penultimate fixture. Trailing 4-0 at halftime following a ruthless English display sparked by Declan Rice, Ezri Konsa, and a Bukayo Saka brace, France looked completely broken. Mbappé initiated a ferocious fightback in the 48th minute, slotting a precise pass from Dayot Upamecano past Dean Henderson. Bradley Barcola reduced the deficit further before Mbappé struck again in the 66th minute, collecting a clever Michael Olise flick to fire home a left-footed strike that briefly brought the score to 4-3.

England eventually stabilised to capture the bronze medal, courtesy of a Saka penalty to complete his hat-trick and a late stoppage-time goal from Jude Bellingham. Yet, the overarching narrative belonged to the individual milestones achieved by France’s number 10. Beyond the career total, Mbappé also claimed the outright record for the most non-penalty goals in World Cup history, moving onto 19 to surpass Messi’s previous benchmark of 17.

The Chase Continues in East Rutherford

The race for the Golden Boot remains open as the tournament moves to the final in New York New Jersey. Lionel Messi, who sits on 8 goals and 4 assists, has exactly one match remaining to close the deficit. Argentina face European champions Spain at the New York New Jersey Stadium, setting the stage for a grand finale where Messi could potentially reclaim the lead or tie his French counterpart.

Should Messi score twice to match Mbappé’s 10-goal benchmark, the tie-breaking criteria established by the FIFA Technical Study Group will prove decisive. Assists serve as the secondary parameter, where both players currently sit level with four each. If they remain deadlocked on both counts, the award will be given to the player with the lower cumulative minutes on the pitch across the tournament.

Behind the top two, Jude Bellingham’s late goal against France cemented his third-place standing on 7 goals. Erling Haaland also finished his campaign with 7 goals but sits behind Bellingham due to registering zero assists.

The match also signaled the conclusion of an era for French football, serving as Didier Deschamps’ 187th and final game in charge of Les Bleus. While his team missed out on a podium finish, the emergence of Mbappé as the tournament’s absolute statistical king ensures French influence remains firmly stamped on World Cup history.
