Telecommunications regulator and legal frameworks confirm that forwarding unverified rumors via messaging apps carries heavy fines and jail terms.,

ABU DHABI, UAE:Telecommunications authorities and legal officials in the United Arab Emirates have reiterated strict warnings against the spread of unverified rumors and fake news across digital platforms, confirming that the prohibitions extend fully to private messaging chats and closed digital groups.

Under UAE Federal Decree-Law No. 34 of 2021 on Combatting Rumours and Cybercrimes, circulating false information or reposting unverified reports from unauthorized sources is a punishable offense regardless of whether it occurs on public social media or within private messaging applications such as WhatsApp or Telegram.

Authorities emphasized that creating, forwarding, or republishing misleading data, fake news, or sensational rumors triggers legal liability even if shared without malicious intent. The law draws no legal distinction between the original creator of misinformation and individuals who merely forward or share it to private contacts.

The legal framework establishes a minimum fine of 100,000 dirhams (AED) and a prison sentence of at least one year for individuals convicted of spreading false information that harms public order or national interests. During periods of crisis, emergencies, or heightened security situations, penalties escalate to a minimum fine of 200,000 dirhams and up to two years in prison.

The UAE Cybersecurity Council and Federal Public Prosecution urged residents and citizens to verify all information through official state channels and recognized national news outlets before sharing content. Regulators noted that maintaining digital discipline and responsible communication is essential for safeguarding public safety and preventing unnecessary panic within the community.
